Joseph Casey

I joined AF in April 2023, working with your AF Energy team to manage data relating to your electricity consumption. I’ve learnt a great deal about your interesting and diverse operations, both farming and other rural businesses.

Learning curve

My work has furnished me with valuable insights into the complexities of the energy markets, and the robust decision-making procedures that ensure we achieve the most favourable terms practicable – maximising value and minimising risk when securing your energy contracts. More generally, I’ve had a swift education in the significance of collaborative economies of scale and procurement best practice.  

Data, data, data

After reading Chemistry at university, I worked for a national property consultancy predominantly for public sector clients, firstly in strategic asset management and then as energy analyst. I have extensive experience of high-level reporting on carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption for building and vehicle portfolios. Also in the management of programmes of work addressing challenges at particular premises – using high-precision energy data to provide intelligence so clients could make operational changes to leverage savings, or appraise options to prioritise capital investment.

Making metering smart

I’m happiest solving analytical problems or tackling data-processing conundrums. But my core role at AF of evaluating the validity of electricity invoices, and ensuring our Members are billed correctly, is generally quite straightforward, particularly when Members furnish us with regular meeting reads, or have upgraded to smart metering. I’m currently co-ordinating Members’ applications for smart meter upgrades where their electricity supplies are eligible. We’ve negotiated a great deal with electricity supplier EDF which means new meters are installed free of charge, and you get a two year subsidy in metering charges. Away from the desk

I enjoy photography, walking and spending time with my family, as well as reading and playing computer games.  A medium-term aspiration is to return to skiing sometime soon – a formerly annual pleasure that I haven’t enjoyed since the birth of my now four-year-old daughter.
