Let’s meet… Sam Day

11 November 2025

AF Utilities Procurement Manager Sam Day leads the charge helping Members navigate a fast-changing energy landscape. From Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to electricity supply contracts, Sam shares how his team is streamlining processes and shaping a smarter, more flexible future for AF Members.

My role at AF

“I lead a brilliant team of six who look after everything from electricity import supplies to mains gas and water portfolios.

“We’ve also recently taken on the management of AF Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), which is an exciting area to be involved in, especially as we head into renewal season.”

“We’re always looking for those wins - better unit rates, fair standing charges, and contracts that genuinely fit our Members’ needs.”

Making electricity supply contracts work for Members is Sam's priority

My background

“I’ve worked in the energy industry for over ten years, across a range of roles, mainly with energy suppliers and metering agents, before joining AF. Being on the consumer side now means I can put my inside knowledge to best using helping our Members save money where possible, which is really rewarding.

“With rising costs and inflation, we’re always looking for ways to save more. We’re working on new opportunities so we can offer options that work best for individual Members.”

Key projects

“I’ve got three main projects on the go. The first is our PPA renewals, which are coming up in April. It’s no longer a one-size-fits-all situation, so we’re talking to both our current and potential new suppliers to explore different options.

“The second project focuses on our water portfolio, reviewing whether our current supplier is still the best choice based on service, charges and overall value.

“The third is our import electricity contract, which comes up for renewal in March 2027. We’ve already started purchasing volume from the wholesale market for the last 12 months of that contract, and we’re looking at renewal options to make sure we’re well prepared.”

Your AF Utilities team are working on a number of key projects to add value.

Challenges and opportunities

“Renewable technology is still a huge opportunity. If you have roof or ground space, solar generation is well worth considering. It can really help reduce import costs and even generate income.

“There are also some industry changes on the horizon, particularly to standing charges and transmission costs from April 2026, and we’ll share more information with Members about the impact of these soon.

“It’s a balancing act, but with our Members’ feedback and support, we’re shaping a stronger, more flexible utilities offering for the future.”

Looking ahead

“We’ve been listening to Member feedback and are simplifying things where we can. Our new invoice summary page will make bills much clearer, which we’re hoping to start including in your monthly AF Statement Packs soon.

“Market-wide half-hourly settlement is coming over the next 12–18 months. This move will mean we have access to more energy consumption data so we can help Members better understand your usage and costs.

“It’s a busy, exciting time for us, and I’m proud of the progress we’re making.”
