Why work on your woodlands?

03 September 2025

Proper woodland management encourages biodiversity, boosts timber yields, and can protect your land for the future. AF Member and Searles Forestry Director Olly Scott explains how careful forestry practices can benefit both the landowners’ bottom line and the environment.

“I’m hands on in every aspect of the business, from operating machines to overseeing day-to-day business operations. We work with several other AF Members, thinning woodlands, harvesting timber, and managing brash for chipping.”

AF Member Olly Scott believes being hands-on is key to running a successful forestry business

Why manage your woodlands well?

“Maintaining woodlands gives trees the best chance to thrive and that can have several benefits:

  • Boosts biodiversity – healthy woodland supports a variety of plants and wildlife

  • Maximises timber value – proper management increases long-term financial returns

  • Protects the land – reduces risks like overcrowding, disease and fires."

Boost biodiversity

“Biodiversity grows when you allow sunlight to reach the forest floor, encouraging new growth and creating a layered woodland structure that supports a wider variety of species.

“We leave behind standing deadwood and low-value timber to provide habitats for birds, bats, and other wildlife.”

Healthy woodlands, sustainable returns

“If a woodland is managed correctly, the landowner can achieve maximum yield of high-quality timber over time. You want trees that grow straight and healthy. Thinning trees reduces competition for light, water, and nutrients.”

“A well-managed woodland can produce consistent timber harvests over decades, providing a steady income rather than a one-off gain.”

Not sure where to start?

“Focus on long-term health, not short-term profit. Get a forestry consultant involved. Choose someone insured, qualified and genuinely invested in the woodland’s health."

AF Member Olly Scott, Searles Forestry

“Involving experts ensures operations are both environmentally sensitive and effective. A forestry consultant will survey your site before work begins to check for bird nests, bat roosts, and badger sets.

“If protected species are present, you can bring in an ecologist to carry out a detailed survey and define boundaries for where work can and cannot take place.”
