This year has given us a stark reminder of just how quickly fire can take hold.
2026 has seen exceptionally hot and dry conditions, with an unprecedented level of wildfire activity across the UK in what the Met Office has confirmed was the UK’s hottest summer on record.
Autumn is a good time to take stock and check your fire extinguishers. You don’t want to find out an extinguisher is empty, damaged or past its service life when you need it most.
Any extinguishers that have been used, damaged or reached the end of their service life should be serviced or replaced. A quick check now can make sure your fire-fighting equipment is ready to do its job if the worst happens.
Remember:
All standard fire extinguishers should be serviced every year.
Water, foam, and dry powder extinguishers have a five-year life and should then be replaced.
CO₂ extinguishers have a 10-year life and should then be replaced.
It’s also worth checking your insurance requirements. If an incident occurs and your extinguishers are out of service, have not been maintained or should have been replaced, this could have serious implications when making an insurance claim.
Now is the time to make sure you have the fire protection you need for the year ahead.
