AF is looking for a new Chair to take the helm and, with our Board of Directors and our Chief Executive, steer the best course for our business serving our 3,000+ Members all over the UK.
We are the largest farmers’ buying group in the UK, with a purchasing power approaching £250 million. We are a co-operative, owned by our Members and we trade on a not-for-profit basis. Our role is to work with farmer Members and the role of Chair gives the right individual a unique opportunity to oversee a remarkable collaborative effort at the heart of the rural economy.
The role is non-executive and the main responsibility is to oversee the strategic direction and effective governance of the co-operative, ensuring the business provides great value for the membership through delivering world-class procurement of farm inputs.
These are extremely challenging but exciting times for farming and the wider rural economy. Our new AF Chair will play a pivotal role, with our Directors, in helping farmers to navigate the pressures of rising input costs, changes to government support, uncertainties of future trade deals, Net Zero targets and disruption by technology.
Not only do we ensure competitive pricing and a single point of access to over 1,000 suppliers, we also share in-depth commercial insights to help our Members with their decision-making and we are widely respected for the perspective we give. Our AF Aginflation Index, published every six months, is valued as the independent indicator of trends in input costs and is used by many of our Member businesses and others in their commercial planning and negotiations over price-setting.
The skills we need in our Chair include a strong commercial background in a business of scale, a track record of success, awareness of buying groups, in-depth knowledge of business-to-consumer trading and e-commerce, financial acumen and exceptional interpersonal and strategic stakeholder management skills.
The remuneration for the AF Chair is £32,800 per annum for a time commitment of up to 40 days a year including 11 Board meetings a year.
